King Crimson Exiles

The recording sessions for Larks’ Tongues In Aspic capture some of the flexibility that the new line-up enjoyed during their rehearsing and subsequent tour of the previous year. At the front of the track, Jamie Muir’s atmospheric rubbing glass rods with oily cloths and what sounds like an overdubbed zither exemplifies the creative approach to developing the feeling of the piece and it’s interesting to note that Fripp has a very clear idea about how much of it should be used in the final mix. David Cross is playing flute though he was uncredited on the sleeve of the album and while not all of the flute heard in this take, or indeed the viola in the introduction, made it into the final mix it confirms again the exploratory aspects of the process at that time. John Wetton’s piano during the middle section was similarly left uncredited on the finished album. However, it’s lovely to be able to hear in greater detail the richness in tone and mood that it adds to the finished track. Finally, Fripp’s acoustic guitar, bright and crisp in sound, with decorative twinkling harmonics, is nevertheless steeped in melancholia that reflects the song’s subject matter, his delicate picking knitting the whole piece together.

This is the twelfth volume in this wonderful series, and this collection has some very fine pieces within it. Excavated treats from the murky, cavernous archives, mostly, in this instance taken from the multi-track reels of tape that have been digitised over the years, and archived to hard drives! In the deep distant past, we only used to offer these as MP3s, but now for your delight and fetishization, can be suffered & enjoyed in full FLAC quality. Robert Fripp The Last Of The New York Heart Throbs

The Last of the Great New York Heartthrobs DGM/Panegyric are a small team preparing a boxed set with over 750 tracks, and regrettably accept that mistakes are made and some discrepancies are inevitable. This annoys, irritates and disappoints us. It is also part of the price we pay for offering an extensive boxed set of 32 discs at an affordable price. On Disc #22 in The Exposures boxed set, “The Last of the Great New York Heartthrobs” is in mono – not stereo as listed. The stereo version does, in fact, appear correctly twice, in standard and high resolution, elsewhere in the boxed set (CD#5 & BluRay#25). For those who purchased the boxed set, wishing to hear it in high resolution and unable to play the BluRay, it is available for download here.

Robert Fripp Peaches

Frippertronics at Fort Lauderdale on 10 July 1979. DGM/Panegyric are a small team preparing a boxed set with over 750 tracks, and regrettably accept that mistakes are made and some discrepancies are inevitable. This annoys, irritates and disappoints us. On Disc #27 in The Exposures boxed set, the Frippertronics at Fort Lauderdale on 10 July 1979 mysteriously plays the wrong audio, while correctly being the length of the missing show. For those who purchased the boxed set, the correct performance is available for download here.

King Crimson Starless Solo (Trio Version)

Alex Mundy’s latest exploration of the Crimson catalalogue centres upon the closing moments of Red and its final track, Starless. It’s always interesting hearing something so familiar, so deeply ingrained into the fabric of our listening life that it’s almost impossible to imagine it being any other way. By revisiting the multitracks we hear, for the first time, a guitar solo where Mel Collins’ extemporising would later be placed. By stripping and paring away some other instrumentation on the coda we can more clearly discern the harmonic and textural additions that formed part of Fripp’s approach to the recording of the piece, some that made it through to the final and some that didn't. These kinds of reveals, while not seeking to usurp the place of the finished work, do at least allow Crimheads to get a better understanding of all the elements, heard and not heard, that go into the making of a classic Crim track.

King Crimson The Great Deceiver Dub

As we all know not everything that gets recorded makes it through to the final mix. However, thanks to Alex Mundy’s detective work on the original session reels for The Great Deceiver, we can now hear some of those passes that were once lost. The eager-eared among you will spot many additional embellishments that have previously been unheard. These include guitar chokes on the first verse as well as a violin harmony line and some additional guitar lines in that first chorus, a substantially different pass on the violin solo and guitar-based shades and colouring in the coda. Fascinating stuff.

King Crimson Robert And Trey

1992 was a busy period for Robert Fripp and Trey. Not only was the Robert Fripp String Quintet active but Fripp and Gunn were touring with David Sylvian developing material that would eventually lead to The First Day album released in 1993. Fripp and Gunn were also working on a variety of themes and motifs though whether any of the items in this haul of audio treasure trove excerpted from a 45-minute DAT were intended for the Quintet, Sylvian & Fripp or the looming possibility of King Crimson isn’t clear. What is apparent however is the abundance of ideas each of these four pieces contains. The first has the cyclical shimmering guitar that Fripp would explore in his early soundscapes (especially those in Argentina two years later). The second is a darker theme underpinned by Gunn’s loping Stick line. There’s a close resemblance in the third piece to the bridge of Sylvian & Fripp’s Jean The Birdman but in this instance, they are expanded upon and fly off to an altogether different space. Fripp and Gunn’s tight unison work definitely has a whiff of Crimson sulphur about it, while the fourth piece - perhaps the most surprising find of all - is a delicate, lilting prelude to a ballad that is quite unlike anything we’ve ever heard from this duo.

King Crimson Into The Frying Pan (Vox And Guitars)

Stripping back the layers of instrumentation to peer through to the inner core of a song is always an interesting exercise. This latest demix from Alex Mundy offers Crimheads an opportunity to go, metaphorically at least, ahem, into Into The Frying Pan. Initially beginning life as a descending/ascending motif developed by Fripp and Gunn it was prominently featured during King Crimson’s fraKctalisation in 1997, firstly in ProjeKct Two and all the subsequent iterations. In this version, we hear for the first time alternative guitar breaks from Belew, especially those tenaciously clawing their way into the unfolding soundscapes at the conclusion of the main song section. Belew’s vocal experimentations are every bit as interesting as anything the instrumental players come up with. Speaking in 2001, Adrian stated that the strange patina on the vocals across 2000’s The ConstruKction Of Light, reflected his interest in processing his voice in a microtonal fashion perhaps echoing the ‘fractal’ approach that had been taken overall. “Instead of it being just 12 notes, it’s split up into 32 notes in the vocals. So you have all these little notes that are in between the normal notes.”

King Crimson Pictures Of A City

One of the highlights of the reformation of King Crimson in 2014 onwards was the inclusion of numbers that had remained dormant for over 40 years on long-forgotten set lists. For example, Pictures Of A City, which had slumbered away since 1972, was revivified to astonishing effect by the multi-headed Crim. Alex ‘Stormy’ Mundy has isolated audio tracks from KC72’s appearance at Denver’s Summit Studio and mixed them with Crimson in Berlin circa 2019, placing Jakko and Mel Collins next to Robert Fripp, Ian Wallace, Boz on bass only and er, Mel Collins. Aside from the experience of hearing Mel duetting with his younger self, particularly in the middle section, Jakko’s vocals are a superb fit for the ’72 lineup.

King Crimson Cadence Kudasai

It could be argued that the first officially released King Crimson mash-ups, wherein one era of Crimson is juxtaposed with another, appeared when the chorus of The Court Of The Court Of The Crimson suddenly rose up out of the chaos and turbulence of the closing moments of The Devil’s Triangle from In The Wake Of Poseidon. Such proto-sampling aside, the first timeline crossings proper were to be found on the Frame By Frame box. Released in 1991, it saw Adrian Belew’s vocals replacing those on the 1970 recording of Cadence And Cascade, while Tony Levin renewed the bass of the original Bolero from Lizard. Here, Alex Mundy’s audio alchemy has Mel Collins and Gordon Haskell from 1970’s Poseidon sessions, spinning forward just over a decade to meet with Belew, Levin, Bruford, and Fripp as they recorded 1981’s recording of Matte Kudasai. The result is a series of happy accidents in a beguiling mix that goes some way towards answering the oft-posed question of what 80s KC might have sounded like had a woodwind player been invited to join.
